Ask people to name famous singing duos and you'll probably hear Simon & Garfunkel, Sonny & Cher, and Hall & Oates. Yet the latter never existed, at least not officially. Unlike the other two, Darryl Hall and John Oates never released any albums under the name 'Hall & Oates.' Every studio album they made was released under their full names, and this was something they chose to do for a specific reason.

Hall has gone on the record as saying that the two songwriters always saw themselves as separate artists, and they wanted their fans to see them that way, too. They were individuals who collaborated, not a band. He even admitted that they didn't really do much together outside of their musical lives.
