This Fascinating Fake-English Song Became a Hypnotic Hit
Have you ever wondered what English sounds like to people who don't speak it? This, apparently.
Sometime last year I wrote an article for Listverse about singers who sang songs in languages they didn't actually know. Some of the songs, like David Bowie's "Warszawa," weren't even sung in a real language at all. All of the artists I chose were ones who would normally sing in English, which led me to overlook this amazing, creepy, yet weirdly addictive gem from the Italian singer Adriano Celentano.Imposter English
With his obscenely lengthily named song, "Prisencolinensinainciusol," Celentano wanted to mimic the way English sounded to non-native speakers. So he went into a studio, looped a beat, and improvised some Elvis-y sounding vocalisations over the top. No one seemed to mind the fact that he was just spewing out sounds, and the song topped the charts in several European countries following a TV performance a few years after its initial release.
